It’s all but confirmed now: a smaller notch is happening

Apple introduced the controversial notch on the iPhone X back in 2017, and since then, every new modern iPhone came with this feature.

Since then, however, we’ve been hearing repeatedly that Apple was working to make the notch smaller, and this year, it might finally be happening.

And it’s all because the company has turned to a clever design change that indeed allows the notch to shrink without actually affecting its functionality in any way.

An alleged photo revealing the front panels of the upcoming iPhone 13 lineup provided to MacRumors by iRepair shows that Apple has moved the earpiece speaker to the top bezel, thus allowing the notch to be smaller.

Three iPhone sizes coming later this year

While I think it’s way too early to take this alleged leak for granted, especially because it’s likely that Apple hasn’t yet decided every little aspect about the iPhone 13, the front panels indicate that the Cupertino-based tech giant will launch the same four-model lineup in 2021 as well.

In other words, we’re going to get upgrades for the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, most likely with pretty much the same screen sizes.

This isn’t necessarily surprising, to be honest, though people close to the matter have repeatedly suggested lately that Apple might give up on the mini model because of its poor market performance. According to these reports, the iPhone 12 mini was the only model selling below the expectations, and this has forced Apple to adjust the production capacity at some factories in order to build fewer models, in turn focusing on the iPhone 12 Pro.

But if this leak is accurate, the mini is here to stay, and the iPhone 13 lineup will include a new 5.4-inch iPhone as well.
