Modern context menu is hidden in build 25151

Microsoft has recently released Windows 11 build 25151 to users enrolled in the Dev channel of the Windows Insider program, but at first glance, the changelog is pretty light, with the focus clearly on fixes and performance optimizations.

But as it turns out, there’s still a very important change, though it’s not yet activated by default and must be manually enabled by users.

It’s the modern context menu design that Microsoft originally announced and then pulled earlier this year. The context menu obviously aligns with the rest of the operating system, as it continues Microsoft’s overhaul of the Windows experience.

FireCube has shared the steps required to activate the new modern context menu on Twitter, explaining that you need Vivetool for the whole thing. The command required to enable the new modern context menu in Windows 11 using the latest version of Vivetool is the following:

vivetool /enable /id:36302090

Once you enable the modern context menus, you should be able to see them in Windows 11 build 25151 when you right-click a file and go to the Open with > Choose another app menu.

What’s new in Windows 11 build 25151

Officially, this new build was entirely focused on fixes and improvements, with Microsoft, for instance, claiming it may have resolved the shutting down problem that users came across when using the power options in the Start menu.

“We believe an underlying fix in Build 25145 addressed the recent issue where shutting down via the Start menu wasn’t working for some Insiders (unexpectedly rebooting instead), and as such are removing this from the known issues list. If you are continuing to encounter this issue with the latest updates, please report it in the Feedback Hub,” Microsoft explained.

At this point, it’s still not known when Microsoft could re-enable the modern context menu for all insiders by default.
