Widespread glitch discovered in the latest updates

Microsoft shipped new cumulative updates for Windows devices today as part of the May 2022 Patch Tuesday, but as it turns out, there’s also something unexpected in this latest release.

In addition to plenty of improvements, the Windows 10 and Windows 11 updates also come with a bug, as users on reddit are complaining of broken Event Viewer after the installation of cumulative updates KB5013942 and KB5013943.

In the case of the latter, however, the problems are much worse.

KB5013943 apparently is causing lots of startup problems, as apps like Discord, Microsoft Teams, and several others are apparently broken too. There’s a chance the whole thing is related to the .NET Framework 3.5 improvements that are included in this update, and this is the reason manually installing the Framework might be required after deploying KB5013943 on the device.

Critical security updates

While many might be tempted to delay the installation of these updates, security experts tell users to consider updating their devices in the next 72 hours, all because of the vulnerabilities that are addressed in all versions of Windows.

“This month features vulnerabilities in a number of applications that are prevalent in most enterprise organizations, including Windows NFS, Remote Desktop Client, and Active Directory,” Chris Hass, Director of Security at Automox, said in a mailed statement.

“Windows NFS is a CVSSv3.1 9.8 vulnerability that allows for remote code execution and is present in every Windows Server version from 2008 forward, which puts most organizations at risk if action isn’t taken quickly. CVE-2022-26925, a Windows LSA Spoofing Vulnerability, could allow an attacker to intercept or man-in-the-middle network traffic. Considering Microsoft has confirmed exploitation of this CVE in the wild, system administrators should put this patch near the top of their list.”

Microsoft is yet to acknowledge the new bugs detailed above.
