Microsoft says it’s already working on a fix

Windows 10 build 18396, which is the most recent preview build that Microsoft shipped to users in the Fast ring of the Windows Insider program, could fail to install on some devices.

Microsoft has already acknowledged the problem and said that the installation of this build could fail with error c1900101 because of a compatibility issue with a storage driver on the affected PCs.

The company says that only a limited number of insiders are impacted and explains that no workaround is available right now. However, despite the fact that the installation of this new build fails, Windows can successfully restore the previous version and roll back to the original configuration correctly.

“The device will attempt to install, fail, and successfully roll back to the currently installed build on the device. Attempted re-tries to install the build, either manual or automatic, will not bypass this issue,” Dona Sarkar, chief of the Windows Insider program, said.

Fix already in the works, but no ETA can be shared just yet

Microsoft is currently working on a fix, and in the meantime, no matter what you try, this build still can’t be installed on the affected device, Dona Sarkar explains.

“Attempted re-tries to install the build, either manual or automatic, will not bypass this issue. A fix is forthcoming, but there are no known workarounds currently. Note: By default, the update will attempt to install (3) times. Users may pause updates if they experience this issue and want to bypass the re-try attempts,” she explains.

A new build is likely coming next week, but it remains to be seen if a fix for this problem is going to be included.

Windows 10 build 18396 comes with several notable improvements, including an option to create events from the taskbar and support for passwordless logins in the operating system.
