Anniversary Update end-of-support already reached

Microsoft was projected to pull the plug on Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update (version 1607) on October 8, but this week, it was discovered that the company silently updated a support document, suggesting that a one-year extension may be possible.

Technically, what Microsoft did was edit the end of servicing page for Windows 10 mobile version 1607 to state EOL is planned for October 2019, and not 2018 as it was originally announced.

But just like we speculated in our article a few days ago, it was all just a typo, and someone working for Microsoft mistakenly indicated October 2019 as the end of support for version 1607.

Version 1607 support ended

Now Microsoft has updated the support page to state that the Anniversary Update is no longer supported, so users whose devices are still powered by this version wouldn’t get any updates and security patches.

“Microsoft ended support on October 9, 2018 for the following editions which were released in August 2016 (version 1607): Windows 10 Mobile [and] Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise,” the page now reads.

“This means that users are no longer eligible to receive new security updates, non-security updates, or free assisted support options. Customers who contact Microsoft Support will be directed to update to the latest version of Windows 10 Mobile to remain supported.”

While Microsoft does recommend users to update their devices to a newer version of the operating system, the Anniversary Update was the last one to support the majority of phones, so going beyond this point is technically impossible.

Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update is thus the most popular version of Windows 10 Mobile, which means that Microsoft has just made one big step towards giving up on its mobile operating system. This is projected to happen next year when the support for the latest version of Windows 10 Mobile would be officially discontinued.
