A simple reset of your device should offer the upgrade

Microsoft started the rollout of Windows 11 earlier this week, but as the company said on several occasions, the whole thing takes place in stages, so not everybody receives the new OS at the same time.

In other words, some people would have to wait longer than others before Windows 11 shows up on their devices, and of course, a manual upgrade isn’t by any means recommended unless you know exactly what you’re doing.

As it turns out, owners of the Surface Pro X have a very simple (yet painful) way to trigger the upgrade to Windows 11 on their devices: just reset the laptop and the new operating system should then show up as an automatic upgrade.

As discovered by someone on reddit, if you reset the Surface Pro X, the OOBE experience includes an “Upgrade to Windows 11” button that allows the device to automatically download the new operating system and then install it, so the next time it boots, it gets you straight to the new desktop.

Rollout complete by mid-2022

Microsoft has promised to complete the rollout of Windows 11 by the summer of 2022.

“Following the tremendous learnings from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience. That means new eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first. The upgrade will then roll out over time to in-market devices based on intelligence models that consider hardware eligibility, reliability metrics, age of device and other factors that impact the upgrade experience. We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022,” Microsoft explains.

In the meantime, you can very well upgrade to Windows 11 using the stand-alone ISO images or with the help of the Update Assistant released by Microsoft.
