Microsoft has just confirmed that Windows 10 Redstone 5, the next major feature update for its operating system, would launch as October 2018 Update.

While no specifics were provided as to when the rollout could kick off, Erin Chapple, corporate vice president, Microsoft, said on the sideline of the IFA 2018 show in Berlin that more details would be shared in the coming weeks, as the Windows team works on finalizing the update.

“I’m pleased to announce that our next feature update to Windows will be called the Windows 10 October 2018 Update,” she said.

“With this update, we’ll be bringing new features and enhancements to the nearly 700 million devices running Windows 10 that help people make the most of their time. We’ll share more details about the update over the coming weeks.”

RTM scheduled for September 25

According to a report from WindowsCentral, Windows 10 October 2018 Update, which will also be referred to as Windows 10 version 1809, will begin shipping to users in early October.

The proposed sign-off date for this update is September 25, but as with everything still in the development stage, it remains to be seen if Microsoft indeed manages to meet this deadline.

By the looks of things, insiders could receive the final build on September 14, with further improvements to be shipped until September 25.

As it happens with every new Windows 10 feature update, Microsoft is expected to publish a day-one patch for October 2018 Update that would be released to all devices getting the stable build. This patch would include all the changes the Windows development team made after the September 25 sign-off date and the start of the rollout.

In the meantime, Microsoft is working around the clock to finalize the October 2018 Update, and several new builds are expected to be released to participants in the Windows Insider program in the coming weeks.
