23% of organizations not ready to install the OS

Microsoft has recently announced that more than half of commercial PCs are now running Windows 10, but a recent survey from WinMagic paints a different picture regarding the adoption of the operating system in the enterprise.

No less than 23 percent of the organizations said they aren’t yet ready to upgrade their computers to Windows 10, while 30 percent of the IT pros don’t even know when support for older versions of Windows would come to an end.

As a reminder for everyone, including for these IT pros, Windows 7 will reach the end of support in January 2020, after which no other security patches would be shipped. Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 will remain the only two supported Windows versions.

Concerns over migration security

But despite the approaching end of support for Windows 7, no less than 29 percent out of the 150 respondents to the survey said they are “concerned about the migration process,” and in 68 percent of the cases, the main concern was a potential security breach.

“Other concerns included one quarter (25 percent) who cited application management, software & hardware compatibility and around one fifth (18 percent) who stated user disruption or loss of productivity,” the findings of the survey reveal.

And the bad news doesn’t stop here. One third of the respondents said they do not know if they have the tools for a secure migration to Windows 10.

Windows 10 is close to overtaking Windows 7 worldwide, and there’s no doubt the closer we get to the January 2020 deadline, the more computers would be upgraded to this latest operating system.

At this point, third-party data provided by NetMarketShare puts Windows 7 at the top of the pack with over 40 percent share, while Windows 10 is the runner-up with approximately 37 percent share.
