Smaller bezels coming to the rescue for modern design

Apple is expected to introduce a new 6.5-inch OLED iPhone this year that could be marketed as a Plus-sized version of the iPhone X, and a new report today provides us with an early look into how the device could look like.

Japanese site Macotakara says the iPhone X Plus could have nearly the same size as the iPhone 8 Plus despite the substantially bigger screen, and it’s all thanks to the smaller bezels. These allow Apple to reduce the overall dimensions of the device, increase the screen estate, and at the same time, go for the modern design that it patented with the debut of the iPhone X.

The same source says the larger iPhone X will be 0.2mm thicker than the iPhone 8 Plus, so it’s expected to measure 7.7mm in thickness, all because of the rear camera.

6-inch (not 6.1-inch) LCD iPhone also coming

The original iPhone X itself will receive an upgrade with the 2018 generation, and the report reveals that it’s likely to have the same body as the current model, but instead feature an improved camera with a bigger camera sensor, and thus bigger lens.

A third model is projected to be included in the 2018 iPhone lineup as well. The 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will actually be a 6-inch configuration, Macotakara says, and will come with Face ID too. This means there’s a chance a similar design will be offered and both the Home button and Touch ID would be abandoned for this new model.

Face ID will be available across the entire lineup, and more importantly, it looks like Apple plans to enable facial recognition to work in horizontal mode as well. This will be powered by iOS 12 and will also allow for Face ID to be used on the iPad, which is expected to get the facial recognition system later this year.

It goes without saying that everything should be taken with a pinch of salt for now, but the cited source says the info comes from very reliable sources.
