New data shared by Counterpoint reveals that iPhone was the best-selling premium device in the first quarter of the year, with Apple reaching its highest first-quarter share in this segment since Q1 2017.

Apple sales accounted for no more, no less than 62 percent of the total premium segment, according to Counterpoint, up from 57 percent in the same quarter a year ago.

Samsung was the runner-up, though the South Koreans went down from 18 percent in Q1 2021 to 16 percent in the first quarter of 2022. However, the Galaxy S22 Ultra was the best-selling premium Android device during the quarter.

“Apple continued to lead the premium market, exceeding 60% share for the second consecutive quarter. This was driven by the iPhone 13 series. The iPhone 13 has been the best-selling model globally each month since October 2021. This was also the highest first quarter share for Apple in the premium segment since Q1 2017,” Counterpoint explains.

iPhone 13 leading the pack

When it comes to devices, the iPhone 13 was by far the leading model with 23 percent of the sales, followed by iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro with 13 percent and 9 percent, respectively. The iPhone 12 was next in the charts with 8 percent, while the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G was the only Android device in the top 5 with 3 percent.

“Foldables are also slowly gaining traction, dominated by Samsung. The sales volume for foldables grew 184% YoY in the premium segment, albeit from a small base, capturing 3% of the total sales volume in the premium segment. More smartphone manufacturers are entering the foldables market segment, and as prices come down, foldables are likely to become more mainstream,” Counterpoint explains.

After Apple and Samsung, Xiaomi managed to get the third place in the charts, followed by OPPO and Vivo.
