14 DAY TRIAL // Apple has already announced the Digital ID feature in a series of states, but as it turns out, the company is now getting ready to launch it in more regions.
iPhones replacing IDs and the driver’s license is something that comes in incredibly handy, especially because the traditional documents are no longer needed. But of course, before this feature can become available in a specific state or country, Apple needs to work together with the local authorities on the official implementation.
The company hasn’t yet released an official announcement on this, but it looks like the Digital ID feature is about to go live in Maryland, according to the official page of the government.
“Now you can add you Maryland driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch, then present it easily, privately, and securely at select TSA checkpoints. Your Maryland Mobile ID lives in Apple Wallet on your Apple device, keeping your data private and secure,” the Maryland government explains on the official page.
The feature works on an iPhone 8 or later and Apple Watch Series 4 and later, and it requires Face ID or Touch ID to be enabled on the smartphone.
“Maryland Mobile ID is a voluntary, secure, digitized version of your MDOT MVA-issued driver's license (DL) or identification card (ID) available in the Apple Wallet app on your iPhone and Apple Watch,” the government says.
“Maryland Mobile ID offers even more security and privacy benefits than the physical state ID or driver's license because Marylanders get to review the personal information they share with others and use biometric authentication with Face ID or Touch ID to authorize it. Maryland Mobile ID on iPhone and Apple Watch is currently the ONLY form of mobile phone-based identification that is recognized by MDOT MVA and it is only available to individuals that have a current, valid Maryland-issued driver's license or ID card. You must have an eligible Maryland driver's license or state-issued identification card.”
