Major camera upgrades planned for the 2022 iPhone lineup

It’s not a secret that Apple is planning big upgrades for the iPhone, but unfortunately, it looks like 2021 may not be the year to bring any.

But on the other hand, if we are to trust Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, there’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to the 2022 iPhone generation, as the Cupertino-based tech giant is working on massively upgraded cameras on the Pro models. More specifically, the rear camera would be upgraded to a 48-megapixel sensor (up from 12-megapixel on the current models), and the devices are expected to support 8K video recording as well.

The standard iPhone 14 is also likely to receive a camera upgrade, but the exact specs aren’t known right now.

No iPhone 14 mini

For Apple, all these improvements make a lot of sense, especially because the company is also making changes in its device lineup in a way that’s supposed to better differentiate the standard models from the Pro counterparts.

The 2022 iPhone lineup will include four models, but no mini, so in theory, we’ll get two Pro models, with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, and two standard versions, also with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays.

In other words, Apple wants two regular models and two premium siblings, and upgrading the camera on the Pro versions is one easy way to make a big difference between them.

The iPhone 14 mini, on the other hand, would be dropped, possibly to make room for another iPhone SE that could grow in size. A recent report indicated that iPhone SE could at one point be based on the iPhone 11, therefore coming with a bigger screen and Face ID. However, a new iPhone SE is due in the spring of the next year based on the same iPhone 8 design and with Touch ID.
