Rumor claims the iPhone 14 will be a modest hardware upgrade

Without a doubt, the debut of the iPhone 14 in the fall is one of the most anticipated device launches of the year, especially because Apple is expected to launch a completely new model.

In other words, while the lineup will include four iPhones, just like before, it will also include an all-new device that will replace the iPhone mini form factor.

That’s right, the 5.4-inch iPhone is getting the ax, with Apple to introduce a new 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max as a larger version of the iPhone 14.

The two other iPhones will wear the Pro tag and will sport the same dimensions as the current versions, namely 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman (via PA), the iPhone 14 will actually be a modest upgrade over the iPhone 13. In other words, it’ll be more of an iPhone 13S, as Apple will apparently bet big on the software overhaul coming in iOS 16 to bring new capabilities to users.

Gurman says in the latest version of the Power On newsletter that iOS 16 will also include a massive overhaul of the Messages app, this time with the focus on social capabilities.

“In Messages, I’d expect more social network-like functionality, particularly around audio messages. The Apple TV operating system, tvOS, will get more smart-home tie-ins, while the Mac will get some redesigned apps and a much-needed overhaul to System Preferences to make them more in line with Settings on iOS. That includes organizing settings by app,” Gurman said, adding that the Health app is also getting a refresh.

“While the Health app probably won’t be expanding to the iPad and Mac, it will get plenty of new features that work with the iPhone and Apple Watch. Apple also is making significant improvements to watchOS that affect day-to-day operating and navigation. There will be changes to watch faces and the addition of a low-power mode,” he said.
