Apple has just announced that it’s bringing Emergency SOS via satellite to iPhone 14 models, though for the time being, the new feature will only be available for users in the United States and Canada.

The rollout will kick off later this month, Apple says, and will obviously be available on the latest-generation models. However, worth knowing is that the availability of this feature will be rather limited, as it’s developed in partnership with Globalstar specifically for the two aforementioned markets.

Thanks to Emergency SOS via satellite, iPhone users will be provided with access to messaging and emergency services even when no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage is available.

The new functionality is the result of a $450 million investment from Apple’s Advanced Manufacturing Fund, and just as expected, Globalstar receives the lion's share in this funding.

“Delivered in partnership with Globalstar, Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite service utilizes the spectrum in L and S bands specially designated for mobile satellite services by ITU Radio Regulations. When an iPhone user makes an Emergency SOS via satellite request, the message is received by one of Globalstar’s 24 satellites in low-earth orbit traveling at speeds of approximately 16,000 mph. The satellite then sends the message down to custom ground stations located at key points all over the world,” Apple explains.

When no Wi-Fi or cellular coverage is detected, an iPhone 14 can automatically activate Emergency SOS via satellite.

The loading screen displays information about this feature, explaining that a connection is only possible when users are outside (buildings and walls can affect the strength of the satellite signal), and messages will take longer to send.

A report emergency button is displayed right on the main screen, while an SOS button in the top right corner shows when a connection to a satellite is available.
