Apple likely to upgrade the port to USB 3.0 speeds

People familiar with the matter have revealed on several occasions that Apple was considering a switch from the Lightning connector to USB-C on the iPhone.

But if it’s not clear already, Apple has no intention of doing this, and the upcoming iPhone 14 is very unlikely to represent any change in this regard.

In other words, the new iPhone generation projected to launch in September will continue to use Lightning, with almost no chance of seeing USB-C making its way to the iPhone anytime soon.

Improved speed

But the good news is that Apple is actually planning a substantial performance upgrade for its proprietary connector.

The current Lightning port uses USB 2.0 speeds, and while Apple won’t be making the switch to USB-C with the release of the iPhone 14, it at least plans to upgrade its own connector to USB 3.0 speeds.

In other words, the iPhone 14 connector will allow for faster transfer speeds, according to iDropNews, and it’s expected the new capabilities will end up becoming available on all models going live this year.

This means they won’t be exclusive to the Pro models, as Apple will use the upgraded Lightning connector on all its iPhones released beginning with September 2022.

This is just another sign that Apple has no intention of giving up on Lightning in the near future. A speed upgrade for the connector is pretty much the living proof the company has no plan to switch to USB-C, not now and certainly not anytime soon.

The iPhone 14 generation will include a lineup for four different devices, starting with two base models called iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max. The Pro models will continue to be called iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, just like their siblings currently on the market.
