Apple launched the iPhone 12 a few months ago, but the company is already working on a massive upgrade for the next-generation model: the return of Touch ID.

While the Cupertino-based tech giant hasn’t confirmed the work in this regard, and there’s a chance the company wouldn’t say a single thing about this until the unveiling takes place, people familiar with the matter have revealed several times that the return of Touch ID to the iPhone is just a matter of time.

And now a report from WSJ indicates the same thing, confirming Apple wants to bring Touch ID and Face ID under the same roof.

In other words, the iPhone 13 could come with both facial and fingerprint recognition, with Apple said to be exploring embedding Touch ID right into the screen of the device.

Fingerprint sensor in the power button on new iPhone SE

If the approach sounds familiar, it’s because others are already offering similar capabilities, with several Android devices currently offering a fingerprint sensor embedded into the screen.

The last time Apple offered a fingerprint sensor was on the iPhone 8, as the debut of the iPhone back in 2017 marked the company’s transition to Face ID and the controversial notch. Since then, all iPhones that got to see the daylight used facial recognition exclusively, and now it looks like Apple is once again exploring ways to bring back Touch ID.

Not all details are clear right now, as previously we’ve seen reports that Apple wanted the fingerprint sensor to be installed in the side button.

However, this is an approach that could end up being used for the 2021 iPhone SE, which according to people familiar with the matter could see the daylight as soon as the upcoming spring.
