120Hz panels might not be available on the iPhone 12

120Hz displays are the next big thing in the mobile market, and high-end device manufacturers are now bringing such tech to their most expensive models.

But as it turns out, Apple might actually be late to the party because its 2020 iPhone lineup is experiencing several struggles in this regard and 120Hz display panels might not be ready for the iPhone 12.

And it’s all because while Apple can indeed get the new panels, it has a hard time getting their hands on the 120Hz driver ICs, which means that the company needs to come up with an idea to deal with the whole thing.

New iPhones in the fall

And according to Ross Young, the founder of Display Supply Chain Consultants, Apple has two options: either delay the launch of the new iPhones until the missing part is ready or just launch the 2020 device generation without 120Hz and thus stick with 60Hz panels. The option that Apple has apparently picked isn’t something that you’ll be very excited about.

“Hearing that Apple can get 120Hz Pro panels,  but not 120Hz driver ICs. So they will either have to come up with a fix which will be difficult, wait for 120Hz driver ICs and delay the launch possibly significantly or launch with 60Hz. We are hearing they will launch with 60Hz,” Yung explained.

In the meantime, leakster Jon Prosser suggests that 120Hz displays could still make their way to the iPhone 12 Pro (and most likely on the iPhone 12 Pro Max), so this is a suggestion that this will be a feature exclusive to Pro models.

Apple will launch four different iPhone models this year, with the base versions to be a 5.4-inch new configuration sold alongside a 6.1-inch iPhone that will be a direct successor to the iPhone 11.
