New data shared by IDC reveals that the tablet market reached 40.5 million sold units in the second quarter of the year, up 0.15 percent year-over-year.

The numbers exceed analyst expectations, and IDC says it’s mostly the result of promotional sales and education projects.

When it comes to the brands that lead the market, Apple is by far the number one company in the tablet world.

iPad sales dropped from 12.9 million units in the second quarter of 2021 to 12.6 million units in the same quarter of this year, and while the decline could be concerning, it still allowed Apple to secure a market share of 31 percent.

The runner-up is Samsung, though the South Korean company is far behind with just 7.3 million tablets. Its market share dropped from 20.3 percent to 181. Percent.

Amazon recorded an important growth to 5.5 million units and 13.6 percent share, while Lenovo dropped substantially from 4.7 million units to 3.5 million units.

Chromebook sales declining

IDC says the Android market share is also increasing thanks to a series of new tablet vendors, most of them coming from China.

“New vendors like Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, and realme also performed beyond expectations, which contributed to growth in the Android tablet market in the quarter. Meanwhile, Chromebooks continued to decline with shipments down 51.4% year over year to 6 million units in 2Q22. The decline was expected as the inventory buildup is still being cleared out and demand in the education sector has slowed. However, shipment volumes are still above pre-pandemic levels,” the company explains.

In terms of Chromebooks, Dell is the leading company with 1.5 million sold units, followed by Acer, Lenovo, HP, and Samsung. The market fell 51.4 percent during the quarter, with HP experiencing the most substantial decline – down 78.6 percent from 4.3 million units sold in Q2 2021 to 0.9 million units in Q2 2022.
