Notification system redesigned in fresh concept

iOS hasn’t changed too much over the years in terms of usability, and the notification system has remained pretty much the same, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that users do not expect more from every new version.

And while Apple delays the moment when a substantial makeover of its mobile operating system becomes available, skilled designers across the world waste no second and come up with proposals on how certain features can be overhauled in future updates.

Once such example is this new iOS 12 concept that rethinks the way notifications are handled on an iPhone, grouping all popups by apps, and not chronologically as it is the case right now.

Redesigned lock screen

This is without a doubt an interesting approach, and the designer says it could also bring other benefits besides the obvious usability improvement.

“Bundling notifications from a single app together means your brain doesn’t have to phase shift all the time when scrolling through your notifications. In this case, we have 4 messages from 2 people together in one space. This would normally take up far more space and be far less efficient than making each one of these their own notification and making me scroll down until I get to the oldest so I can start reading the conversation in reverse,” the designer explains.

If this idea is adopted, notifications can be easily cleared by simply swiping left, and quick reply options for apps that support it, like iMessage and WhatsApp, would also be offered.

The designer also envisions a small makeover of the lock screen, with the clock now a bit smaller and moved to the upper left corner, while the right side is dedicated to an Android-inspired weather widget.

While there’s a very slight chance to see these changes implemented in future iOS versions, it’s actually a good thing that such concepts make the rounds, as Apple itself can better understand how its mobile operating system can be revamped in a more effective manner.
