As expected, Indian handset maker Intex and Jolla have just announced the first smartphone powered by the new Sailfish 2.0 operating system to be available on the market, the Aqua Fish.

According to a new report, Intex Aqua Fish will be available for purchase in India beginning September for under Rs 15,000 outright, which is about $235 or €215.

The smartphone will compete directly with some of the most popular Android smartphones, so the price tag will be a very important differentiation factor, apart from the mobile platform.

“In our BRICS country strategy we have been proceeding fastest in India, which is one of the most important markets in the future of mobile. We have see a lot of interest among Indian device vendors, digital media houses, and mobile operators, and they all are very keen to work with an alternative to the currently dominating mobile operating systems.

“India deserves its own regional mobile ecosystem, an open platform, which supports local Indian services and businesses,” said Dr. Antti Saarnio, Executive Chairman at Jolla, during launch.

Sailfish 2.0 OS devices come with outdated chipsets

According to Intex, the Aqua Fish will ship with Sailfish 2.0 OS right out of the box, which includes several new features and improvements over the previous version.

When it comes to specs, Intex Aqua Fish looks like a pure mid-range smartphone. The device is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal memory. The good news is the smartphone packs a microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

There's also an 8-megapixel camera on the back, which features autofocus, LED flash and video recording, as well as a secondary 2-megapixel selfie camera.

Intex Aqua Fish has been confirmed to offer dual-SIM and 4G LTE support. The handset will be powered by a 2,300 mAh battery and should sport a 4.7-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports HD (720p) resolution.

It's also worth mentioning that Jolla has teamed up with Times Internet to offer those who purchase the Intex Aqua Fish pre-loaded content such as Gaana and Cricbuzz web apps.
