HongMeng is supposed to help replace Android

Huawei’s in-house operating system often referred to as HongMeng will be faster than both Android and macOS, according to company founder Ren Zhengfei.

Zhengfei discussed the development of the operating system in an interview with a French magazine, explaining that HongMeng will also support Android apps but will be faster than Google’s platform.

Additionally, Zhengfei says noticeable faster performance would be observed when comparing HongMeng with Apple’s macOS as well, as the developing team has focused specifically on achieving a processing delay of less than 5ms.

The Huawei founder claims HongMeng was designed from the very beginning to be a universal platform, so it can be installed not only on smartphones, but also on other devices that the company manufactures, including here PCs and tablets. In other words, it can be a replacement for Windows as well.

Huawei can no longer use Android

According to an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump in mid-May, Huawei is no longer allowed to use hardware and software developed by American companies, and these include Android and Windows as well.

Huawei accelerated the development of the operating system following the ban, so HongMeng would serve as an alternative to both of them, helping the company reduce reliance on American companies and thus have an operating system that would be installed on any device.

People familiar with the matter said earlier this year that HongMeng is supposed to finalized this year and be installed on devices aimed at the Chinese market in the fall. The international launch of the operating system is due next year.

Huawei doesn’t want to give up on the development of HongMeng regardless of how the situation in the United States changes, so expect this operating system to make it to Huawei smartphones no matter if the company is still allowed to use Android or not.
