Huawei really had a hard time dealing with all the sanctions in the United States, and which affected its business in other markets too, and unsurprisingly, this has contributed to a rather substantial drop the company recorded in Western Europe.

According to IDC data, Huawei’s phone sales dropped from 6.2 million in the third quarter of 2019 to no less than 2.5 million units in Q3 2020, a decline of no less than 58.7 percent.

This is a massive decrease, there’s no doubt about it, and the global health issue is another reason to blame for the whole thing.

But on the other hand, the lockdowns happening in Western Europe actually helped companies like Apple and Xiaomi, both of which improved their sales year over year.

Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO – the kings

Apple shipped 8.2 million iPhones in the third quarter of the year, up from 8.1 million units a year before (a 1.1 percent increase), while Xiaomi jumped from 1.5 million units to no less than 3.7 million, which represents an improvement of no less than 151.6 percent.

“Among the top five vendors, Apple, Xiaomi, and OPPO were the stars in the third quarter, delivering the strongest growth in the region. Apple benefited from strong sales of the newly launched iPhone SE (2020) and the continuous performance of its iPhone 11 portfolio. The iPhone 11 and the iPhone SE (2020) were the two best sellers in the quarter,” IDC says.

Samsung continues to be the number one company even in Western Europe, only that the South Koreans are also struggling with the difficult market conditions. Samsung’s new phone sales in this market dropped from 11 million units in Q3 2009 to 10.3 million units in the same quarter of 2020, and this is a decline of 6.9 percent year over year.
