Huawei founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei told the Chinese media at a conference this week that Apple’s iPhone 12 is currently the best smartphone in the world, explaining that Cupertino’s device helps provide its very own technology is worth the money too.

“High-end customers in Europe love Apple. Since (Huawei) doesn’t have premium handsets anymore, Apple’s phones have helped us prove that Huawei’s 5G technology is good,” he was quoted as saying.

But one very important topic Zhengfei discussed during the conference was the restrictions Huawei is still struggling to deal with in the United States.

The CEO said he’d like to discuss the matter directly with the new U.S. President Joe Biden, calling for a more open policy that would eventually come as a benefit from everybody in the industry.

“I would welcome such phone calls and the message is around joint development and shared success,” he said about a potential phone call from President Biden to discuss the security concerns.

Zhengfei also reiterated that no matter what happens, Huawei just won’t give up on smartphones, so the company will continue to invest in mobile devices even without Android and Google services. The company has already developed its own Android-powered operating system, and it’s shipping phones with in-house built alternatives to Google apps.

“We have said before that our 5G technology can be transferred in its entirety. That includes not only the rights to development but also source programs and source codes. If the US needs our chip technology, we can transfer it. Our words are sincere (but) no company has come to negotiate with us so far,” he said.

Zhengfei is confident Huawei would eventually manage to deal with all the struggles, but he too acknowledged that a decline in the smartphone market is expected this year.
