Run Folding@Home in the Windows Sandbox on Windows 10

One of the most recent and useful features introduced in Windows 10 is the Windows Sandbox, which allows you to run apps in a secure environment without being worried of modifications that could be made to your files.

In essence a secure virtual machine, Windows Sandbox also allows users to contribute to the fight against the new coronavirus by simply running Windows 10.

Microsoft itself has explained how this works, revealing that Windows Sandbox make it possible for each and every one of us to donate CPU power as part of the Folding@Home project. Researchers and scientists would then use this processing power to run simulations of protecting dynamics that would help fight diseases, including the current pandemic that has already killed thousands all over the world.

How to help fight the new coronavirus

Microsoft has created a special PowerShell script that takes care of the whole thing if you want to contribute to this project using Windows Sandbox. What you need to do is, obviously, to enable Windows Sandbox on your device, run it, and then from a PowerShell prompt launch the following script:

Powershell.exe -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\install_folding_sandbox_on_host.ps1
“Windows Sandbox you can run the open-source Folding@Home app to help simulate protein dynamics. Folding@Home is one of the most popular distributed computing projects bringing together citizen scientists who volunteer to run simulations of protein dynamics on their personal computers to fight COVID-19 and other diseases,” Microsoft explains.

At the time of writing, there are over 1.3 million confirmed cases of infections with the new coronavirus. More than 74,000 people have died across the world after they contracted the virus. Furthermore, there are nearly 1 million currently infected patients (active cases), with over 47,000 reported to be in a serious or critical condition.
