Microsoft has finalized the development of Windows 10 May 2020 Update, also known as version 2004, so the company has just pushed the RTM build to users in the Release Preview ring o the Windows Insider program.

In other words, the next Windows 10 feature update is now in the last round of testing before getting the go-ahead for production devices. This means the public launch could happen in just a few weeks if everything goes according to the plan.

“We are now getting the Windows 10 May 2020 Update (20H1) ready for release and releasing Build 19041.207 to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview ring. We believe that Build 19041.207 is the final build and we will continue to improve the overall experience of the May 2020 Update on customers’ PCs as part of our normal servicing cadence,” Microsoft explains.

However, everybody knows that waiting for an exciting release is hard, so if you want to give the new Windows 10 feature update a try before everyone else, you can actually do that with just a few clicks.

What you need to do is just download the Release Preview build on your device – while joining the Windows Insider program isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, the final build of Windows 10 version 2004 shipped to testers in this ring is expected to be 99% the same with the one all devices will get when the public rollout starts; at that point, a day-one cumulative update should be offered to devices to add the last-minute fixes.

So basically, if you want to try out the new feature update right now, just enter the Release Preview ring where you’ll be offered the final Windows 10 May 2020 Update build.

To do this, on your Windows 10 device, follow this path:

Windows 10 > Settings > Update & security > Windows Insider Program > Get started > Link an account > Release Preview
Keep in mind that the diagnostic data must be set to the Full level in order to be eligible for Windows 10 preview builds – this allows Microsoft get more information on testing builds and further polish them before rolling out a final production build.

Once you select the Release Preview ring in the wizard, just follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup. You’ll be prompted to reboot your device, so the computer is enrolled in the Windows Insider program, and when you log back in to the desktop, just check for updates to get the final May 2020 Update builds.

Windows 10 > Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Check for updates
Of course, the update will take a while to download and install, but this also depends on your hardware configuration and the Internet connection speed.

As every other feature update, one or more system reboots will be required to complete the installation, but when everything is ready, you are brought back to the desktop with your files exactly where you left them.

Microsoft hasn’t announced a release date for Windows 10 May 2020 Update, but given the final build is already shipped to Release Preview ring insiders, it’s probably just a matter of weeks until the first wave of devices gets the new update. The rollout will take place in stages in order to give Microsoft more time to deal with issues, as this makes it possible for the company to suspend the release for a specific set of devices should it discover a certain hardware or software compatibility issue.
