Make the transition from Edge to Firefox easy as pie

Microsoft Edge is a grown-up now, and after the new version based on Chromium got the go-ahead, it’s finally available on both Windows and macOS.

This new release means Microsoft Edge becomes a worthy alternative to Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, the two browsers that have until now dominated this side of the software market.

As many of you know already, moving from one browser to another isn’t necessarily very difficult to do, especially as all developers, including here Google, Mozilla, and Microsoft, equipped their apps with import tools specifically for this purpose.

So technically, if you want to give up on one browser and start using another one, just use the import tool to have your data migrated to the new app and you won’t need to start from scratch.

Since Microsoft Edge has become such an advanced browser, it’s now possible to import its data in rival apps too, including Mozilla Firefox.

However, if you don’t do this during the installation process, importing data from another browser in Firefox isn’t necessarily the most straightforward experience, and figuring out where this feature is located isn’t something so easy to do.

First and foremost, make sure that you’re running the latest version of Firefox and then in the main interface, follow this path:

Firefox > Menu > Library > Bookmarks > Show all bookmarks
If you want to open this window faster, you can use the next hotkey (of course, this keyboard shortcut is not really easy to guess, but once you use it once, you should save it for later use as well):
CTRL + SHIFT + B
In the new window on the screen, open this path:
Import and Backup > Import Data from Another Browser

At this point, the stable version of Mozilla Firefox can import options, bookmarks, history, passwords, and other data from a total of four different browsers:

On the other hand, if you’re running the Nightly version of Firefox, there are more options available when importing data:

  • Microsoft Edge
  • Microsoft Edge Legacy
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer
  • Chrome
  • Chrome Canary

If you want to import data from Microsoft Edge, just select this option in Firefox and then click the next button. The browser can import the following items:

  • Cookies
  • Browsing history
  • Saved passwords
  • Favorites

Once you hit the next button, Firefox takes care of the whole thing for you, and the process doesn’t take more than just a few seconds.

In the last few weeks, however, most people looked for methods to actually migrate the other way around, as Microsoft Edge has until now been described as a really impressive browser. Despite being based on Chromium, something that not everyone likes, Edge matches the top browsers out there in terms of performance and security, while also coming with new features developed specifically by Microsoft to improve the browsing experience, such as Collections.

To import other browser data in Microsoft Edge, follow this path:

Microsoft Edge > Favorites > Import
Only three browsers are supported for the time being, namely Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. However, it’s worth noting that on Windows 10, Microsoft Edge replaces the legacy version of the browser, and all the data stored in the original Edge is saved. Since it becomes the new default browser on Windows 10 automatically, the transition from the old Edge to the new version is very smooth, especially as Microsoft specifically focused on retaining the look and feel of Project Spartan.
