Apple’s new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max come with an Always-On Display feature, and while critics claim the Cupertino-based tech giant is only copying its Android rivals, users are more than happy to get their hands on such functionality.

However, as a new feature in the Apple world, AOD comes with a behavior that many might have a hard time decrypting, including a series of scenarios when it automatically turns off.

For example, Apple explains in a tech support document that AOD will be disabled when the Low power Mode is on or when the iPhone is lying face down. Furthermore, it’s also turned off when the smartphone is connected to CarPlay.

Here are all scenarios when the display turns completely dark:

  • Your iPhone is lying face down
  • Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag
  • Sleep Focus is on
  • Low Power Mode is on
  • Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
  • You're using Continuity Camera
  • You haven't used your iPhone for a while (your iPhone learns your activity patterns and turns the display off and on accordingly, including if you set up an alarm or sleep schedule)
  • Your iPhone detects that you moved away from it with a paired Apple Watch (Always-On display will turn on when your Apple Watch is close to your iPhone again)

AOD comes enabled by default on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max – keep in mind that these are the only two devices where the feature is available.

“Your iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max display can operate with a refresh rate as low as 1 Hz with a new low-power mode, and uses improved technology that allows the display to dim the entire Lock Screen. The display dims when you lock your device or leave it idle. Always-On display also uses multiple coprocessors in the A16 Bionic to refresh the display using minimal power,” Apple explains.
