Swipe-to-type coming to iPhone with iOS 13

Apple is expected to preview the next major iOS update at the WWDC conference next month, and one of the top improvements coming with this release is likely to be inspired by rival platform Android.

A report from Bloomberg indicates that Apple is planning to introduce a new keyboard option that allows users to type by simply swiping their fingers across letters, with the prediction engine taking care of the actual phrasing.

This is a feature that’s long been available on Android and, in fact, iPhone users themselves can try it out by installing third-party keyboard apps like Microsoft’s SwiftKey.

But if this report is true, then Apple is once again looking at the top Android features to improve iOS usability, after the company implemented tech already available on rival devices, like the wireless charging.

WhatsApp-inspired improvements for iMessage

But the cited source says Apple is planning a massive upgrade in addition to this Android-inspired keyboard feature, like a dark mode on iOS, an updated Health app, and more controls in the Screen Time app to provide parents with more control over who their kids can contact at specific times.

Additionally, Apple wants to update iMessage with features this time copied from WhatsApp, allowing users to set a profile picture and display name. WhatsApp is often considered the number one rival to iMessage, and it is the preferred messaging app especially in Europe and on Android devices.

All in all, iOS 13 will be a major update for iPhones, and the cited source claims that Apple will also focus on refining the experience overall, fixing bugs, and improving performance. Security will once again be a priority, as will be the usability side of the platform.

The preview will most likely ship to developers shortly after WWDC, while the public launch of iOS 13 should take place in September alongside the new iPhones.
