If you’re planning to stick with Windows 7 or 8.1 and refuse the upgrade to Windows 10, there are two options: you can either fight Microsoft’s aggressive push manually or install a third-party app that takes care of everything for you.

The second option clearly sounds a lot better and if you’re looking for an app to do that, GWX Control Panel is one of the most advanced.

Today, the app received another update that brought it to version 1.7.4.1, only a few days after the 1.7.4.0 version got released with several improvements.

This latest update only brings a small improvement, according to the official change log. “Removed a misleading alert that was appearing on some computers with ‘clean’ Windows installs that had not yet encountered Windows 10 symptoms,” the only line of the release notes reads.

Previous improvements

Version 1.7.4.0, however, brought more improvements, including fixes for issues caused by third-party tools that change permissions for some Windows 10-related registry keys. In other words, if you install another app that makes a tweak to registry settings that could ultimately favor the deployment of Windows 10 on your PC, GWX Control Panel should be able to work smoothly despite these.

In addition, it enables the app to search for an option that reads “Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates” in Windows Update. According to the change log, this option can leave your computer vulnerable to the Windows 10 upgrade, so GWX Control Panel also checks to see if it’s enabled.

And last but not least, this version also adds the ability to enable and disable the “recommended updates” section in Windows Update, so that you’ll stay away from any updates that Microsoft might push as a recommended update and which could lead to your computer getting upgraded to Windows 10.

The new OS is offered as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8.1 users until July 29, so expect more patches to be delivered by this date in order to upgrade more computers to Windows 10.
