Software updates will still ship to customers, it seems

Google has just announced the all-new Chromecast with Google TV (HD), so the company sees no reason to continue selling the classic device.

In other words, the Chromecast, which is currently at its third generation, is being retired, with the company to continue rolling out updates for a little longer, as per a recent report.

“Chromecast with Google TV is our next generation of Chromecast, and has your favorite Chromecast features plus comes with the Google TV entertainment experience. You will still be able to purchase Chromecast (3rd gen) and Chromecast Ultra at select retailers while supplies last. We’ll continue to support all existing Chromecast devices with ongoing updates,” Google has been quoted as saying.

All-in on the Chromecast with Google TV

The company’s new big bet is the Chromecast with Google TV (HD), which comes with upgrade capabilities and costs just $29.99 in the United States.

This makes it even more affordable than the original Chromecast, which debuted no more, no less than 9 years ago (feeling old already?) with a $35 price tag.

“We’ve kept that same spirit with all of our Chromecast devices, and Chromecast with Google TV (HD) is no exception. It comes in the same compact and thin design as the Chromecast with Google TV (4K), tucks neatly behind your TV, and set-up is fast and simple. And of course, you’ll still have access to your favorite Chromecast features like casting from your phone, sharing your Google Photos to your TV, and casting your Google Meet video calls to TV, so you can join the team meeting or lecture from the comfort of your couch,” Google said in an announcement today.

“Chromecast with Google TV (HD) streams in high definition with 1080p HDR, and we’ve made software optimizations behind the scenes to make sure you get a smooth and snappy experience no matter what TV you’re watching on.”
