The update should arrive in the coming weeks

Google promises to provide an update to Pixel 3 users that would stop the Android from shutting down apps in the background.

When the first Pixel 3 leaks surfaced online, well before the launch, people said that it doesn’t have enough memory. Both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL ship with 4GB of RAM, and it doesn’t seem to be enough anymore.

And, as many users have suspected, Android is shutting down background applications to keep the memory free. Problems arise when people want some of the apps running in the background, like activity tracking or music. For example, users reported Android shutting Spotify after just a few minutes of background use.

Optimizing is the only option

There are two ways to deal with this potential problem. One of them is to add enough memory to the device, but it’s too late for this now. Google figured out that they could tweak from the software, as they do with pretty much everything else, how the operating system is managing the apps.

Two months after the release of Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, Google is promising that the problem is going to be fixed in the coming weeks. And it’s doing so in a random Twitter reply. It’s not ideal, but at least it’s something.

A user asked Made by Google account on Twitter why is the iPhone XR capable of keeping the apps and games opened, but Pixel 3 XL can’t? Let’s not forget that iPhone XR has only 3GB of memory.

“We're rolling out a software update in the coming weeks to keep background apps from being prematurely closed in certain situations. Appreciate your understanding,” was the answer provided by Google.

An exact date wasn’t offered and “the coming weeks” is somewhat vague, but it’s possible something might arrive with the next Android update, which should be just around the corner, in December.

Until then, make sure you don’t relegate to the background important apps on Pixel 3 phones.
