Benchmark provides early look at new Pixel specs

Google Pixel 3 is one of the most anticipated releases this year in the Android world, but as it turns out, there may be little to be excited about if a new leak is accurate.

A benchmark that’s making the rounds right now shows that the Google Pixel 3 XL may be based on an approach that Google itself highlighted earlier this year and putting the emphasis more on software than on hardware.

The Pixel 3 XL could feature just 4GB RAM and be powered by a Snapdragon 845 processor, according to this leaked benchmark, so in terms of hardware, the device might not be anything too different from the existing Android flagships right now.

Apple-like push for software optimizations

4GB of RAM also leaves a lot to be desired, as fans expected at least 6GB to be installed on this year’s Pixel generation. By the looks of things, however, Google is increasing interested in a strategy pioneered by Apple, who managed to improve the performance of its devices not necessarily by boosting the amount of RAM, but by investing more in software optimizations.

In terms of looks, Google Pixel 3 XL could also come with a notch, just like the iPhone X, though it’s not yet clear whether Google plans to offer an advanced 3D sensing camera system like Apple.

The notch, however, might be bigger and come alongside a large chin at the bottom of the screen as well. The chin would be used as the home of a front-facing speaker, as the phone will definitely be stereo.

The unveiling is expected to happen in October, and obviously, Pixel 3 will run the new Android 9. As it happens every year, Google’s phones are the first to get the latest Android version, with the rest of the industry to follow in its footsteps in the next months.
