Extensions warning removed from the Chrome Web Store

Microsoft has a new browser for Windows and macOS users, and it’s based on the same engine as Google Chrome, so many were taken by surprise when they attempted to install extensions from the Chrome Web Store and received a warning that discouraged them from doing so.

More specifically, whenever someone using the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser to connect to the Chrome Web Store, they got a warning at the top of the screen that read “Google recommends switching to Chrome to use extensions securely.”

Needless to say, these probably made some give up on installing extensions from the Chrome Web Store, despite the whole thing working quite flawlessly.

But beginning this week, it looks like Google is no longer playing dirty over Microsoft Edge extensions, as the company has removed the warning and is now allowing users to install add-ons just like in the case of any other Chromium-based browser.

Edge coming with its own extension store

As per BetaNews, the Chrome Web Store now displays a message reading “You can now add extensions from the Chrome Web Store to Microsoft Edge - click on 'Add to Chrome.’”

As a matter of fact, Microsoft Edge comes with its own extension store anywhere, as Microsoft maintains a dedicated collection where only high-quality and verified add-ons are available. But because Edge is now a Chromium-powered browser, it can install extensions from other stores as well, including Google’s Chrome Web Store – for this to work, users need to manually enable third-party stores from the Settings screen of the browser.

Thanks to the migration to Chromium, Microsoft Edge is now available beyond the world of Windows as well. In addition to support for Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10, the new Edge browser can also be installed on macOS. A Linux version is also in the works, but an ETA isn’t available just yet.
