Error reporting feature now available in Maps for iOS

Google is very committed to improving the experience with Google Maps on all platforms where the app is available, and next in queue is iOS.

The iPhone version of Google Maps has recently been updated with support for error reporting, letting users contribute with reports on crashes, speed traps, and traffic slowdowns.

This feature debuted on Android earlier this year, and Google says it “has been one of our most popular on Android,” so bringing it to iOS is a natural thing to do.

The community-based traffic reports are the essential feature powering a separate navigation app also owned by Google. Waze, which is described as a “traffic navigation app,” uses information submitted by users to avoid traffic jams, with reports including police, road construction, and other hazards that drivers must be alerted of in advance when driving towards a new destination.

No Android Auto support

Google apparently wants to make Google Maps more like Waze, so the second update today concerns a wider array of incident reporting options on both Android and iOS.

“We’re introducing the ability to report four new types of incidents–construction, lane closures, disabled vehicles, and objects on the road (like debris)–so you can quickly know if you’ll encounter one of these potential obstructions on your ride, and plan accordingly. To report an incident, simply tap on the + sign and then on ‘Add a report,’” Google explains.

This second update is now available on Android and iOS.

On the other hand, what’s important to know is that the error reporting feature is only available in mobile apps, without support for Android Auto and CarPlay for the time being. Most likely, it’s just a matter of time until you’ll be able to send reports from your in-car navigation screen, but for now, Google hasn’t provided us with any ETA on this update.
