The company is trying to steer users toward YouTube Music

It looks like the Google Play Music service is about to be retired, and Google is already taking the first steps toward that goal.

Google Play Music has been around for a long time, much longer than other services from Google. It’s not as successful as other online streaming services, and that’s one of the reasons why it’s going to go under the axe.

But the real reason is that Google is trying really hard to make YouTube much more profitable, and one of the spin-off services is called YouTube Music. It’s already known that YouTube users are online mainly to listen to music, so Google figured out that it could make money with a separate, dedicated service.

Who’s going to miss it?

According to a 9to5 report, the option to purchase a gift subscription for Play Music, through the app, was removed with the latest update. Given that not long ago, Google also removed the option for artists to upload songs, its clear that the service doesn’t have long to live.

Google is pretty aggressive in its tactics, and it’s trying to convince people to get monthly subscription to the regular Youtuber service, so removing Play Music to give YouTube Music a boot seems to be part of the strategy.

For now, YouTube Music doesn’t even come close to having the same features, including the option to buy a subscription as a gift, but that might soon change. Also, it’s unclear what will happen with the ability to upload your songs collection, which is a nice feature not available anywhere else.

It’s unclear what’s the schedule for killing Google Play Music, but if history is any indication, then it’s very likely it’s will be gone by next year. When that happens, any subscriptions will probably migrate to the new service.
