The feature debuted in 2015 as Data Saver

Google Chrome continues to be the world’s number one browser, and of course, it’s also the most popular choice on Android as well.

As for what makes Google Chrome such a hit, the answer is as simple as it could be: its feature arsenal is impressive, to say the least, as the browser has almost everything you need. And when it doesn’t, the always-growing extension store comes to the rescue.

Google says Chrome has also evolved substantially in order to reduce data usage, and this is the reason the Lite Mode in the Android version of the app is ready to go.

Launched in 2015 as Data Saver, the Lite Mode is exclusive to the Android version of Google Chrome, and now the Mountain View-based search giant says it’ll retire this feature in approximately one month.

Change happening next month

“On March 29th, 2022, with the release of Chrome M100 to the stable channel, we’ll turn off Lite mode, a Chrome feature for Android that we introduced back in 2014 as Chrome Data Saver to help people use less mobile data on their phones and load web pages faster,” the company said in an announcement.

In case you’re wondering what’s going to happen to users who still rely on the Lite Mode, there won’t be any replacement for this feature. Google says Chrome already comes with the necessary feature arsenal to reduce data usage in a substantial manner, and everything works so well that a Lite Mode is no longer necessary.

“In recent years we’ve seen a decrease in cost for mobile data in many countries, and we’ve shipped many improvements to Chrome to further minimize data usage and improve web page loading. Although Lite mode is going away, we remain committed to ensuring Chrome can deliver a fast webpage loading experience on mobile,” the company explained in its announcement.
