Google is working on adding a dark mode to Chrome browser on Windows 10, and a company engineer recently confirmed that this feature is already under development.

While no details have been provided on when this feature is projected to become available to everyone, Peter Kasting, Chromium developer and senior Chrome Engineer, explained that users can stick with a dark theme until Google officially rolls out this update.

“For desktop, native dark mode support is in progress; in the meantime, we generally suggest people use a dark theme. I can't speak to mobile; the mobile platforms are different teams and I don't have visibility there,” he posted on reddit (via TechDows).

Google Chrome is currently the world’s number one desktop browser, and with a dark theme, it comes in line with the other visual styles that are already available on desktop operating systems.

The dark mode push

Both Microsoft and Apple have developed dark themes for Windows and macOS, respectively, and now software developers are working on adding similar visual styles for their applications. Microsoft, for example, has also released a dark mode for its very own Microsoft Edge in Windows 10, so with Google Chrome’s future update, yet another browser would align with the operating system’s visual style.

There are no specifics as to when the dark theme in Google Chrome could become available to users, but for now, you can just follow Kasting’s advice and try one of the many themes available in the store.

In the meantime, Microsoft itself is also moving to Chromium to build its very own Google Chrome browser, and without a doubt, a dark theme will continue to be offered. A preview version of the new Microsoft Edge browser will be released in the coming weeks and only users enrolled in the beta program will be able to download it.
