New feature currently being developed for Chrome

While Google Chrome is the browser of all browsers, it doesn’t mean it also has everything it needs, but every single update brings new features supposed to improve its usability.

One of the improvements that Google is currently exploring is believed to be tab previews, a feature that is already available in other browsers, including Microsoft Edge.

Basically, tab previews come in handy especially when working with multiple tabs and figuring out which page is which is much more difficult, mostly in case the tab title is shortened. Tab previews allow you to take a peek at a page thumbnail by simply moving the mouse cursor over the tab, and this is exactly the way it works in the default Windows 10 browser too.

And as it turns out, Google wants the exact same behavior in Chrome too, so the company is now working on what it calls Tab Hover Cards for its browser.

Still in experimental stage

There are already two experimental flags in Google Chrome called Tab Hover Cards and Tab Hover Card Images, but they don’t seem to work for the time being, most likely as the feature is still in its early days.

There are no details as to when the search giant plans to bring this feature to all users, but I’m guessing that one of the next few stable updates would include tab previews, especially because this is something that other browsers have had for a long time.

The next Google Chrome updates will also bring other major improvements for users on Windows and macOS, including support for the dark themes. Google wants the browser to respect system-wide settings, which means Chrome should be able to adapt to the visual settings in Windows and macOS and automatically enable the corresponding mode.

In other words, Chrome would be able to switch to its black theme should the dark mode be enabled in Windows 10 all by itself.
