New data shows that Chrome is the leading browser

We’ve known for a while that Google was the leading browser both on the desktop and mobile, but new statistics shared by StatCounter come to confirm that nothing is changing despite the debut of Microsoft Edge.

In other words, Google Chrome continues to be the king of browsers with a market share on the desktop of no less than 66.14 percent in July. This means Chrome runs on more than 6 in 10 computers out there, and this is impressive, to say the least, especially when taking into account that Windows is the leading operating system.

The default Windows browser is now the Chromium-powered Microsoft Edge, and according to StatCounter (via Neowin), the browser now has a market share on the desktop of 10.86 percent. This obviously places Microsoft Edge very far behind Google Chrome, but at least, it has become the second most popular choice on the desktop.

The battle for the third place is fierce

The third browser in the charts isn’t Firefox, as you’d normally expect, but Apple’s Safari. At this point, Safari is exclusive to Mac devices, so the 8.97 percent market share is thanks entirely to macOS. Apple’s desktop operating system is considered the second in global charts following Windows and ahead of Linux.

Firefox is fourth with 8.07 percent, and Mozilla’s browser continues to be considered the only worthy cross-platform alternative to Chromium-powered applications. Indeed, Mozilla has put a lot of effort into improving Firefox lately, and the company has even criticized Microsoft for moving Edge to the Chromium engine.

Opera is the last big name in the charts with 3.07 percent.

Needless to say, Microsoft Edge will most likely improve its market share gradually in the coming months and years, but it’s hard to believe it would ever manage to challenge the domination of Google Chrome.
