Developer finds way to add Chrome to Timeline

Windows 10 Timeline is a new feature of Microsoft’s operating system that allows users to create snapshots of their activities and restore them within the next 30 days.

These snapshots include everything from documents to apps and browser tabs, though for now, only Microsoft Edge is supported.

But since Google Chrome is actually the world’s number one desktop on PCs, it was only a matter of time until third-party browser support was developed. And today, developer Dominic Maas unveiled the first implementation of this feature.

“I found an extension for Chrome that enables Windows Timeline support, but it was a weird hybrid paid store app + free chrome extension. Decided to create my own, acts like Microsoft Edge currently,” he announced on Twitter.

Firefox version almost ready, launch coming soon

Technically, with this extension all Google Chrome tabs show up in Windows 10 Timeline, and while website thumbnails aren’t yet available, everything seems to be running quite flawlessly.

Support for Mozilla Firefox and Vivaldi is currently in the works, so sooner or later more third-party browsers should be able to work with Timeline.

The dev says that several refinements are currently in the works, including an improved UI, better error checking, icons and assets, as well as other touches here and there to make everything run smoothly.

“I recently switched back to Google Chrome (from Microsoft Edge) on my Surface (due to lacking 1Password X support), I was looking around for an extension that would perform similar user activity syncing like Microsoft Edge. I did find one, but it was a paid Windows Store app and a free chrome extension (both required). I figured that it shouldn't be too difficult to implement, so I created this repository,” the dev states on the GitHub page of the profile.
