The update will start rolling out later this summer

Google has just announced a major update for Android Auto that would introduce a completely new design specifically implemented to make controlling apps faster and easier.

First and foremost, Google says that beginning with this update, Android Auto will remember your settings and apps, so when starting your car, it will just begin playing your media and fire up the navigation app that you use.

This is particularly helpful if you use Waze instead of Google Maps and listen to streaming services like Deezer or Spotify, so you get a more personalized experience without a single touch. Android Auto will let you easily start the navigation to a specific destination by tapping a suggested location or saying “Hey Google.”

The new Android Auto version also introduces a redesigned navigation bar that will display turn-by-turn directions, while also providing quick access to app and phone controls. This way, you can perform certain tasks faster, without the need for opening each app individually.

“With the new navigation bar, you'll be able to easily control your apps with one tap. Get turn-by-turn directions, rewind your podcast or take incoming call all on the same screen,” Google explains.

Hello, notification center!

In addition to a new navigation bar, Android Auto will also come with a notification center that will display recent calls, messages, and alerts. You can view, listen, and respond to any missed call or message.

And because the customization power is essential for many users, Google is also working on providing a fresh look for the app. Android Auto will thus feature a dark theme, as well as colorful accents and redesigned fonts.

The updated Android Auto will run just smoothly on cars with wider screens, as Google has focused particularly on optimizing the app to take full advantage of the available screen estate.

The rollout will start later this summer to all Android Auto compatible cars.
