Android apps are already feeling like home on Windows thanks to the latest version of the Microsoft operating system, but Google is about to make the impossible possible with an announcement of its own.

More specifically, Google has revealed that Android games would run on Windows 10 and Windows 11 thanks to a new application that is specifically built for this purpose.

In other words, Google itself has developed, without the help of Microsoft, BlueStacks, or any other company, an application to allow Windows users to play Android games right on their PCs. The games will come with some sort of cross-platform support, meaning that if you start playing on Android, you can then resume from where you left off on Windows.

Google Play Games won’t come with any special requirements, and given it’ll also support Windows 10, it is not related to the Windows Subsystem for Android bundled with the operating system.

Coming in 2022

In a statement for The Verge, Greg Hartrell, Google’s product director of games on Android and Google Play, explained the app will launch in 2022, but no further specifics were shared.

“Starting in 2022, players will be able to experience their favorite Google Play games on more devices: seamlessly switching between a phone, tablet, Chromebook, and soon, Windows PCs,” he said. “This Google-built product brings the best of Google Play Games to more laptops and desktops, and we are thrilled to expand our platform for players to enjoy their favorite Android games even more.”

“This will be a native Windows app distributed by Google, which will support Windows 10 and up,” Hartrell further detailed. “It will not involve game streaming.”

Microsoft hasn’t released any statement on Google’s announcement, but the company has no reason not to be happy about it, especially as it helps its Android efforts gain more traction on Windows.
