It would appear that the team behind the GNOME desktop environment is working on revamping the lock and login screens for the next release coming later this year, GNOME 3.30.

GNOME 3.30 will be the next major release of the open source desktop environment used by numerous GNU/Linux distributions, and now that Ubuntu is using it by default for the latest LTS release, all eyes are on GNOME these days to see what improvements and new features will bring with the next update.

The login and lock screens of GNOME haven't been changed for a while now, but it would appear the team had been working to revamp them. As you can see from the screenshot gallery attached below, the design looks marvelous, and we have to admit that we can't wait to try them out on our personal computers.

Pretty face with brains

According to the design notes, the new lock and login screen that might be implemented in the upcoming GNOME 3.30 desktop environment through the GDM (GNOME Display Manager) component is now just a visual revamp to make things look pretty, but could also offer users some innovative features to drool over.

Among these, we can mention that the login screen will always display the last used user by default, the name of the GNU/Linux distribution used would be displayed in the top-left corner on both the lock and login screens, and graphical user selection can be disabled to allow selection of users by entering their usernames.

Furthermore, the revamped lock and login screens will use a spatial model that supports animated transitions and integration with other components of the host operating system. Also, no more than eight users will now be displayed on the login screen, and the system notifications will be reduced on the lock screen.

The notifications will now be displayed through a set of app icons each offering a notification badge counter. This will also have an impact on some existing settings like the "Show message content on lock screen," which will be gone if the new lock and login screens are to be implemented in GNOME 3.30, which is expected on September 5, 2018.
