The GNOME Foundation announced today the host cities of the next two GUADEC (GNOME Users And Developers European Conference) events, which will also be the codenames of the next releases of the GNOME desktop environment.

With the GNOME 3.34 "Thessaloniki" release out the door and the upcoming GNOME 3.36 "Gresik" in the works, the GNOME Project is planning on the next GUADEC conferences, namely GUADEC 2020 and GUADEC 2021, which will take place in the summer of 2020 and 2021 in Zacatecas, Mexico, and Riga, Latvia, respectively.

"Recognizing our flagship conference as something that should move throughout the world is important. We hope to not only make it easier for people from North, Central, and South America to attend, but to help kick-start local participation in the GNOME project," said Neil McGovern, the GNOME Executive Director.

GNOME 3.38 and GNOME 3.42 codenames revealed

With this, the GNOME Project has revealed the codenames of the GNOME 3.38 desktop environment as "Zacatecas," due for release in September 2020, and of the GNOME 3.42 desktop environment as "Riga," due for release on September 2021. Of course, the GNOME Project hasn't yet confirmed these version numbers, so we're just guessing here.

GUADEC is the main and biggest event for GNOME fans, where GNOME developers and contributors gather together to share ideas and knowledge on the new features of the next major release of the GNOME desktop environment for Linux-based operating systems. But Spring release are codenamed after the host city of the GNOME.Asia conferences.

Until then, the GNOME Project will focus their efforts on the next major release, GNOME 3.36, which is dubbed "Gresik," after the host city of the GNOME.Asia 2019 conference, and which will be released next year on March 11th. Stay tuned for more details on the GNOME 3.36 "Gresik" desktop environment as new development releases surface.
