Skype no longer getting new features for phones

Microsoft has recently announced a new Skype for Windows 10 update, and the company has apparently used this occasion to make another substantial step towards leaving Windows phones behind once and for all.

As reported by AAWP, development of new Skype features for Windows 10 Mobile has stopped, which means that those who’re still running the dying mobile operating system would no longer get any goodies beside what they have right now.

While this doesn’t come as a huge surprise given the current state of the mobile platform, it’s certainly a controversial Microsoft decision, especially as Windows 10 Mobile still has approximately one year of support left.

But by the looks of things, Microsoft has specifically blocked phones from running the latest Skype update. Technically, the software giant added a restriction for the new Skype version that requires devices to run Windows 10 build 17134 (April 2018 Update) in order to install the update. Since the April 2018 Update has never been released for Windows 10 Mobile phones, this is technically impossible, which means that the Skype update is blocked on these devices.

Giving up on Windows phones

It’s not yet known if the next Skype releases would come with a similar restriction, but as things look like right now, this is another way that Microsoft is using to leave its platform behind.

And when looking at the bigger picture, there’s nothing wrong with it. The company has already confirmed that no new features and devices supporting Windows 10 Mobile would be released, and this means that Microsoft would also give up on its own apps gradually as well.

On the other hand, Skype continues getting updates and improvements on Android and iPhones, so for some reason you’re still on Windows 10 Mobile and disappointed with not getting new features anymore, there’s only just one way to go.
