Problem acknowledged, fix already in the works

If you can’t access GitHub right now, you’re not alone, as the service is down for a number of users due to what appears to be a data storage system issue.

The problems first showed up a few hours ago and GitHub officially acknowledged them at 02:09 Easter European Summer Time, explaining that the team was “investigating reports of elevated error rates.” Updates that were posted on the service status page since then indicated that the service was unavailable for a number of customers, with issues also hit when accessing GitHub.com.

At the time of publishing this article, GitHub appears to be working fine here, though we’re seeing reports of problems in other parts of Europe. For the time being, it looks like only some specific regions are affected.

In an update posted by the GitHub team, it was revealed that the culprit is a data storage system. “We're failing over a data storage system in order to restore access to GitHub.com,” the team said.

In the last few hours, all the work has been focused on repairing the said data storage system, with some customers still unable to connect to GitHub right now.

“We are continuing work to repair a data storage system for GitHub.com. You may see inconsistent results during this process,” the latest update published only a few minutes ago reads.

The Microsoft deal

GitHub is in the process of being acquired by software giant Microsoft following a deal announced earlier this year and worth $7.5 billion.

The acquisition has recently received EU’s approval, as the Commission found that Microsoft taking over GitHub does not infringe on competition rules and it can go forward.

Microsoft has promised to let GitHub operate independently despite the takeover, though a number of improvements are also on their way. Microsoft is also the biggest contributor to GitHub.
