14 DAY TRIAL // GitHub starts 2019 in style, with the service announcing a couple of major changes to its free and enterprise offerings.
First and foremost, GitHub free is being updated with unlimited private repositories. However, these private repositories only allow for up to three collaborators per repository at no extra charge, while public ones will continue to be offered without a free and with unlimited collaborators.
“For the first time, developers can use GitHub for their private projects with up to three collaborators per repository for free. Many developers want to use private repos to apply for a job, work on a side project, or try something out in private before releasing it publicly,” Microsoft explains.
Additionally, Microsoft is making changes to its enterprise products, this time with the goal of unifying the offering that’s available with a fee.
Enterprise improvements
For example, GitHub Enterprise Cloud (formerly known as GitHub Business Cloud) and Enterprise Server (formerly called GitHub Enterprise) now because a single product called just GitHub Enterprise.
“Organizations that want the flexibility to use GitHub in a cloud or self-hosted configuration can now access both at one per-seat price. And with GitHub Connect, these products can be securely linked, providing a hybrid option so developers can work seamlessly across both environments,” GitHub explains in its announcement here.
In addition to these changes, GitHub’s other products will continue to be offered as well, including GitHub Pro and GitHub Team, both focused on professional coding and collaboration features.
“And of course, open source contributors will still have everything they need to collaborate on public repositories, including our free version of GitHub Team,” GitHub says.
All these changes come into effect today, and GitHub says there’s more to improve for its users in 2019, with further announcements to be released in the upcoming months.
