Alexander Tratsevskiy announced the release of Calculate Linux 18, a major version of his Gentoo-based operating system targeting the Russian Linux community.

Coming ten months after Calculate Linux 17.12 New Year's Eve release, Calculate Linux 18 brings faster boot times to the live ISO images, ports all the in-house built Calculate Utilities to the latest Qt5 application framework, adds a new way for managing network connections, and updates most of the core components and apps.

"We are happy to announce the release of Calculate Linux 18! In this latest version, Calculate Utilities were ported to Qt5, your network is managed in a different way, and binary packages get checked using their index signature," developer Alexander Tratsevskiy wrote in the release announcement.

Here's what's new in Calculate Linux 18

Among the new features included in Calculate Linux 18, we can mention easier installation of Virtual Private Server (VPS)  and Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS), updates installed with support for selecting a keyboard layout and use only one (root) position, as well as automatic partition detection for the text-based installer.

By default, Calculate Linux 18 doesn't configure network parameters, nor it updates it during installations of network management tools, adds the "--network" option to cl-setup-system for network configuration, and implements ALSA as default sound system, allowing users to adjust the sound volume in the Cinnamon edition.

Software-wise, Calculate Linux 18 comes with up-to-date components including the latest Linux 4.18.12 kernel, GCC 7.3 system compiler, Python 3.6 compiler, KDE Frameworks 5.50 and KDE Applications 18.04.3 software suites, KDE Plasma 5.12.5 LTS desktop environment, LibreOffice 6.0.6.2 office suite, GIMP 2.10.4 image editor, and Firefox 62.0.3 web browser.

Unfortunately, Calculate Linux 18 still uses the X.Org Server 1.19.5 display server, while the Directory Server editions ships with Samba 4.5.16, Bind 9.11.2_p1, OpenLDAP 2.4.44, Postfix 3.3.1, and ProFTPD 1.3.5e components. The Cinnamon 3.8, MATE 1.20, and Xfce 4.12 desktop environments are used on the Desktop editions.

Calculate Linux 18 is now available for download as Calculate Linux KDE (CLD), Calculate Linux Xfce (CLDX), Calculate Linux Cinnamon (CLDC), Calculate Linux MATE (CLDM), Calculate Linux Scratch (CLS), Calculate Directory Server (CDS), and Calculate Scratch Server (CSS) flavors for both 64-bit and 32-bit computers.
