A future Windows 10 update could come with a tool to perform a reinstall of the operating system using a system image stored in the cloud, according to a recent leak.

Microsoft watcher WalkingCat revealed on Twitter that the boot UX, or the boot user experience, would be updated in Windows 10 build 18950 to allow the reinstall of Windows using two options that aren’t yet available in the OS.

When initiating a reinstall users will be allowed to choose between cloud download for the fresh image of the OS and a local reset, which would power a reinstall of the existing Windows operating system.

Windows 10 build 18950 is part of the Windows 10 20H1 development branch and is not yet available for users.

Windows Core OS

Needless to say, these options are very likely to be part of the Windows Core OS experience and could end up being offered on Windows Lite, a simplified version of Windows that would compete against the likes of Google Chrome OS. On the other hand, it could very well be offered in the full flavor of Windows 10 too, albeit this is something that still remains to be seen.

Making it easier to reinstall Windows 10 is without a doubt a welcome improvement in Windows 10, especially as users need more convenient methods to start from scratch, not necessarily at home, but also in working environments.

At this point, Windows already comes with a dedicated menu section for recovery, letting users reinstall Windows either by keeping the installed apps and settings or by removing everything.

There’s no ETA when the new options could land for users, but given they are included in build 18950, they should become available for Windows insiders once this version is released to testers, possibly in the coming weeks.
