Purism has just announced its first Linux mini-PC, which is available for preorder right now from $699.

The Librem Mini is first and foremost a device that’s supposed to come with all the benefits of the Librem lineup of computers in a smaller form factor, so it still runs PureOS with Pureboot and Librem Key support.

It can be used as a stand-alone desktop computers “to protect your family and business,” as the parent company itself says, but it can also play the role of a media center as it offers smooth 4K video at 60 fps. And of course, it can also be a mini server with full disk encryption and tamper detection.

Purism says its mini computer can very well be used for delivering conferences and events, as it’s small, light, and energy efficient and features a VESA mount.

Tech specs

As for the technical specifications, the Purism Librem Mini comes in line with the other Librem computers.

It’s powered by an Intel Core i7-8565U (Whiskey Lake) with active cooling and up to 4.6 GHz (depending on configuration) paired with up to 64GB RAM and an Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU chip. As for storage, you can equip the mini computer with a hybrid configuration comprising a SATA III SSD/HDD and an M.2 SSD.

The base configuration, which is available for $699, comes with 8GB memory and a 250GB SSD.

When it comes to dimensions, the Librem Mini measures 12.8cm (5.0 inches) x 12.8cm (5.0 inches) x 3.8cm (1.5 inches) and tips the scales at 1 kg (2.2 pounds), so Purism says it’s “smaller than a Mac Mini, slightly bigger than a Raspberry Pi.”

While the mini Linux PC is available for pre-order right now, Purism says it’d start deliveries once the pre-order goal is reached. At the time of writing this article, Purism has received a little over $2,700 in pre-orders, with the target goal set at $50,000.
